Description

Lease from Elizabeth Hollenbeck to J. V. Wachtel and Fred A. Walton, Los Angeles, 31 December 1895. The instrument specifies the terms of a renewal of the lease for Wachtel and Walton's insurance and loan agency, real estate firm and other purposes for four and a half years for space 228 of the Hollenbeck Block at Second and Main streets. The building was built by the owner's late husband, John Hollenbeck. Notably, the typed document has an inserted handwritten condition that the lease did not allow "any office for the purpose of selling liquor or intoxicating drinks . . . or any other objectionable business." Three of the four panels of the portfolio are separate and there is some browning and light soiling, so the overall condition is fair
