Description

LEASE, TEMPLE ADOBE BASEMENT, 10 SEPTEMBER 1893 Color: Black; White A lease contract between Walter and Charles Temple and Giovanni Piuma, 10 September 1893. The handwritten document, on plain ruled paper and evidently in Walter Temple's hand, is for a one-year lease by Piuma of "the basement of the old house on Temple Homestead," referring to the 1851 adobe, for an annual rental fee and also stipulated that "Piuma shall furnish the house with two gallons of his best white wine." Another condition was that "Piuma agree to keep the place clean and in good condition." The document is signed by the three men and witness Steffano Beluffo. At the bottom is a note of receipt signed by the Temples that the first month's rent was received. On the reverse are two inscriptions, one in ink reading "Lease to Piuma" and the other, just below the other in pencil, reading "for Winery [underlined]." With many folds, a stain at the upper right and lower left areas, rust stains at the bottom, a tear at the bottom center and page browning, the condition is fair.
