LEATHER-COVERED WOOD TRUNK, ATTRIBUTED TO F. P. F. TEMPLE
Color: Brown
A leather-covered wood trunk, attributed to F. P. F. Temple, ca. 1840s. The item has an elaborately embossed leather cover with shell, floral, and paired line decorative patterns. Large rivets adhere the leather to the wood frame. Long leather straps secured to the back of the lid with a fabric stitch wrap around the the front, through stitched guides, and were secured to metal buckles, only one of which survives. There are also leather handles on the sides with arrow-shaped ends and also threaded through stitched guides. On the front, just below the lid is a metal plate and part of the lock mechanism. The remainder of this mechanism, that was mounted onthe inside of the trunk and in which the lid clasp would be joined with it, is in the trunk, loose and bagged, and there are some metal straps and wood pieces also in the trunk. The inside is lined with cloth and the inside of the lid, which is secured to the body by striped fabric hinges, is a hidden stroage compartment, accessed by two largely recessed metal handles. When the handles are utilized, the compartment falls forward and there is a sorage case with two smalllatches and a leather strap for a handle. A black fleur-de-lis ornaments the cover of this compartment. On the face of the compartment oriented toward the inside of the trunk is a red and gold painted pouch with a lock. In poor condition, the artifact has losses to the leather as well as many abrasions, wear, dry rot, and tears to the leather; the damaged lock and leather straps; discoloration and tears of and to the fabric; damage to the inner compartment and pouch; old termite infestation; and part of the bottom cut, when contents of the trunk were removed in 1995.Lexicon
