Description

LETTER FROM LUTHER INGERSOLL TO WALTER P. TEMPLE, 13 MAY 1921 Color: White A letter (a-b) with two carbon copied letters (c-e) and envelope (f) from Luther Ingersoll to Walter P. Temple, 13 May 1921. The cover letter is written in pencil on the blank reverse of a published letter to the "California Voice" journal and explains the mailing of the copied letters as a commission to relieve its addressee, Johnstone Jones, of the responsibility of completeing a history of the Temple and Workman families. Item (c) is a letter on Ingersoll's letterhead from the Los Angeles Public Library to Jones from Ingersoll regarding Jones' commitment to complete material for the history contracted by Temple and Jones. Items d-e), on plain white stationary, outline the conditions by which Jones is relieved by Ingersoll for the completion of the Temple history, except for certain articles called for by contract and noted in c). It was noted that sixteen of the twenty-one articles were completed. This work was eventually disregarded when Perry Worden was hired soon after this, in 1921, to write the family history, though he never completed his work. Item f) is on the letterhead of the Ingersoll collection and is addressed to Temple at his Alhambra home. A notation by Temple in pencil to Worden is on the front of the envelope. The letters are in fair condition with folds in thirds; small tears at the edges and folds of a-b); creases on all; and various stages of discoloration, especially on d) where the outlines of c) from the contact with a-b) leave a dark area of acidity. The envelope is in poor condition with the opening tear at right; a large crease at lower right; and discoloration at the left and right edges.
