Description

Color: Blue; Brown; Green; Yellow A reproduction of an 1894 lithograph of Los Angeles, drawn by B. F. Pierce and published by the Semi-Tropic Homestead Company. The artifact has birds-eye views of the city from two directions, the upper and larger is north from the corner of Wilder Street and Central Avenue, while the lower and smaller is from the ccorner of Tenth and Pearl (now Figueroa) streets. There is great detail to both views, but streets are named, major buildings indicated by number, with the key at the bottom of the document and larger landmarks more familiar, such as the Los Angeles River, hills and mountains. Some outlying subdivisions, such as Boyle Heights, East Los Angeles (now Lincoln Heights) and Pico Heights are marked, as are more distant locations, such as Glendale (though incorrectly sited), Santa Monica, the Pacific Ocean, and Santa Catalina Island. Land sections are various shades of green and yellow, mountains are brown and blue, and water courses are blue. At the bottom, near the identification key for landmarks, are drawings of nine major structures, including business blocks, hotels and the high school. An explanatory note by Pierce as to why he divided the view is at the lower left. At the bottom right corner is a caption indicating that the item is a reproduction from an original in the Amon Carter Museum of Western Art in Fort Worth, Texas. Aside from pin holes at the corners, some creases and light soiling, the artifact is in good condition.
