LOOKING WEST ON THIRD STREET TOWARD BUNKER HILL, LOS ANGELES, ca. 1905
Color: Black; White
A photograph mounted on black photo album paper of 3rd Street looking west toward Bunker Hill, Los Angeles, ca. 1905. The photographer stood in the middle of the street, which is dirt with two sets of street railway tracks in it. Several horse-drawn conveyances are driving in the street or parked at the curbs. On both sides are portions of the facades of commercial structures and apartments. In the distance is the tunnel that took the street beneath Bunker Hill, of which a portion is in view. On the hill are some structures, particularly a large three-story Queen Anne. Also of note is Angel's Flight railway at the left of the tunnel. The presence of Angel's Flight helps date the photo and contradicts the caption, which seems to be in modern gold ink at the bottom of the matte and reads "LOS ANGELES -- 1880's." With mounting adhesive residue on the back, slight paper yellowing on the photo, slight fading of the image from overexposure, and the inscription, the overall condition is good.
