Description

Color: Black; White A photograph of the Los Angeles County Courthouse by Frederick H. Maude, ca. 1890s. The image is mounted onto a white paper matte with two punched holes at the left edge, suggesting it was disbound from a photo album or souvenir book. The image shows the courthouse from the northeast, at the corner of Temple Street, which runs to the lower left, and New High Street, which is at the right. A broad staircase leads to the corner from the Romanesque-style building, which has two enormous American flags hanging near the front entrance from the structure. In the streets are an electric cablecar on New High Street and horse-drawn conveyances, while people walk on the sidewalks. A number of buildings are visible on the aforementioned streets, as well as on Broadway which is at the background right. At the bottom are inscriptions in white ink, including "149. County Courthouse, Los Angeles, Calif." at the left and the name of the photographer at the right. With creases on the photo and matte, a dent at the top right corner of the matte; soiling; yellowing of the matte; slight image fading; soiling, especially on the back; and general wear, the overall condition is good. Number-Units: 1 Print Size: 5"H x 8"W (photo); 6 5/8"H x 10"W (mount)
