Description

Color: Black; White "Los Angeles Evening Express," Volume 5, Number 125, August 8, 1873. The words "EVENING EXPRESS" are on the masthead with an image of a train. The city name and date are at the center, the volume is at the left, and the issue number is at the right. The proprietor, Tiffany and Co., is listed in a box at the upper left along with office location and subscription terms. The first page consists of seven columns of advertising and one column of general news. Page two has local, state, and national news, including dispatches by telegraph, editorials, and a report on the meeting of the county Board of Supervisors, including a note that a petition by William Workman and others concerning the boundaries of the San Jose township was granted. There are also nearly two columns of advertisements. Page three concerns local news, including mention that William H. Workman had shipped some wine and that a team had been dispatched to F. P. F. Temple's Cerro Gordo Water and Mining Company. There are also four columns of advertising. Page four consists entirely of advertising, but also lists the slate of candidates for the People's Reform and Democratic tickets for the upcoming county election. F. P. F. Temple is the Treasurer candidate for the former and William H. Workman for Assembly on both. At the top right of the first page is, in pencil, the inscription "Mechanics Institute." With creases, light soiling, yellowing, a horizontal half-fold, a loss at the front bottom right corner, and several small edge tears, the condition is good.
