Description

Color: Black; White "Los Angeles Evening Express," Volume 6, Number 94, January 6, 1874. The newspaper has the words "EVENING EXPRESS" on the masthead, along with an image of a train. The city name and date are at the center just below and the volume is at left, and the issue number at right. The proprietor, Tiffany and Co., is listed in a box at the upper left along with office location and subscription terms. The first page consists of five columns of advertising and two of state and national news. Page two has local, state, and national news, including dispatches by telegraph, an article about the formation of the Southern California Cooperative Warehouse and Shipping Association, which counted F. P. F. Temple as a founding trustee and nearly three columns of advertising, including new listings. Page three concerns local news, including minutes from the county Board of Supervisors meeting, a report from the county hospital, court reports, including the case of Temple v. Wilson and Malloy, and listing of real estate transactions. Slightly more than three columns of advertising are also on this page. Page four features a post office directory, more advertising, and legal notices. At the top right of the first page is, in pencil, the inscription "Mechanics Institute." With browning of the paper, losses at the bottom left corner of the front, minor moisture damage and edge tears, the condition is fair.
