"Los Angeles Evening Express," Volume 7, Number 65, June 15, 1874. The newspaper has the words "EVENING EXPRESS" on the masthead, along with an image of a train. The city name and date are at the center just below and the volume is at left, and the issue number at right. The proprietor, Tiffany and Co., is listed in a box at the upper left along with office location and subscription terms. The first page consists of six columns of advertising and one of state news. Page two has some editorials about the local scene, one on a lecture about race with racist commentary from the editor, as well as some local news and items received by telegraph. There are also three columns of advertising. Page three is the local news section, including the sentencing of a man convicted of squatting on property owned by F. P. F. Temple. There are also four-and-a-half columns of advertising. Except for brief items of news from Wilmington in the southwestern part of the county, the last page is taken up entirely by legal notices and advertising. At the top right of the front page in pencil is "Mechanics Institute," a trade school in Los Angeles. In fair condition, the artifact has brittleness; creases; some soiling; page darkening; a little foxing; a few small tears; the loss of the bottom left corner; and general wear.Lexicon
