Description

Color: Black; White "Los Angeles Evening Express," Volume 7, Number 54, June 2, 1874. The newspaper has the words "EVENING EXPRESS" on the masthead, along with an image of a train. The city name and date are at the center just below and the volume is at left, and the issue number at right. The proprietor, Tiffany and Co., is listed in a box at the upper left along with office location and subscription terms. The first page has five-and-a-half columns of advertising and somewhat less than two of national and regional news, including a reprint from a San Bernardino newspaper that the Los Angeles and Independence Railroad engineer was examining Cajon Pass as a possible route. Page two has local, regional, state, national, and international news, the latter two by telegraphic dispatches. Included in the local items is material on the proposed trak for the Los Angeles and Independence Railroad and samples of oil from the refinery of Temple's Los Angeles Petroleum Refining Company. There is also slightly more than three columns of advertising, including new listings. Page three concerns local news, including a note that equipment was on the way to Temple's oil claim at San Fernando [Newhall.] Slightly more than four columns of advertising is also on this page. On the fourth page is a post office directory and a few state news items, with the remainder consisting of legal notices and advertising. At the top right of the first page is, in pencil, the inscription "Mechanics Institute." With creases, browning of the paper, and a horizontal center fold, the condition is fair.
