LOS ANGELES EVENING EXPRESS, SEPTEMBER 16, 1874
Color: Black; White
"Los Angeles Evening Express," Volume 7, Number 144, September 16, 1874. The newspaper has the words "EVENING EXPRESS" on the masthead, along with an image of a train. The city name and date are at the center just below and the volume is at left, and the issue number at right. The proprietor, Tiffany and Co., is listed in a box at the upper left along with office location and subscription terms. The first page consists of six columns of advertising and one of state news and verse from a local poet. Page two has some local news, particularly relating to the Los Angeles and Independence Railroad, which then had F. P. F. Temple as President, telegraphed dispatches of state, national, and international items and three columns of advertising and listings of marriages and births. Page three is the local news section, including descriptions of Mexican Independence Day and a crime, and reports on real estate transactions and court proceedings. Three columns of advertising are also here. Except for brief items of national news, the fourth page is taken up entirely by legal notices and advertising. At the top right of the front page in pencil is "Mechanics Institute," a trade school in Los Angeles. In fair condition, the artifact has brittleness, some soiling, page darkening, a few small tears, and general wear.Lexicon
