Color: Black; White
"Los Angeles Evening Express," Volume 5, Number 147, September 3, 1873. The newspaper has the words "EVENING EXPRESS" on the masthead, along with an image of a train. The city name and date are at the center just below and the volume is at left, and the issue number at right. The proprietor, Tiffany and Co., is listed in a box at the upper left along with office location and subscription terms. The first page consists of seven columns of advertising, including a listing of the Democratic ticket for the county election, which was held two days previously. One of the state Assembly candiates was William H. Workman. Page two has local, state, and national news, including dispatches by telegraph, an editorial about area business prospects, and several references to the election, including the unsuccessful candidacy of F. P. F. Temple for county treasurer. There are also two columns of advertising, including new listings. Page three concerns local, national, and international news and items and three-and-a-half columns of advertisements, including the slate of the "People's Reform" party ticket, which included Temple and William Rowland for sheriff, the latter being successful. Page four consists entirely of advertising. At the top right of the first page is, in pencil, the inscription "Mechanics Institute." With two areas of loss at the spine, creases, page browning, lightly faded printing, and edge tears, the condition is fair.Lexicon
