Description

Color: Black; White A stereoview of Los Angeles from Fort Moore Hill, ca. 1880s. The image shows buildings in the foreground facing Spring Street and extends eastward to the Los Angeles River. There are many commercial structures in the view, most notably the Market House, or Old Courthouse, built by Jonathan Temple in 1859 and razed thirty-two years later and which is at the center with its distinctive clock tower. To the left is a portion of the Temple Block building constructed two years earlier by Temple. Beyond Alameda Street are open fields, farm houses and smaller structures showing that commercial development had not reached those areas yet. In pencil at the left edge of the reverse is the inscription "Los Angeles from the high school." With corner rubbing, acid burns on the top of the reverse, slight warping, creased corners on the reverse, a dented bottom right corner, light soiling, some fading along the left side, slight loss of the paper mount at the top left corner, moisture stains on the right, stains along the back at the top, handling stains, and tears at the left corner, the overall condition is good.
