Description

"Los Angeles Eine Blume aus dem goldenen Lande," Ludwig Salvator, 1878. A German language book discussing Los Angeles's economy, population, climate, plant life, commerce and industry. Includes passages on pros and cons of the Native American and Chinese populations in Los Angeles. The book provides a summary of life in Los Angeles and includes charts and illustrations. A small booklet has been adhered to the pastedown in front announcing a 1928 historical society lecture on the history of Germans in Southern California. Archduke Ludwig Salvator of Austria, who shunned public life in his homeland in favor of exploration and the study of natural history, spent the winter of 1876 in and around Los Angeles. This German-language account of his travels and observations was translated into English and published in 1929 as Los Angeles in the Sunny Seventies, a Flower from the Golden Land. Front pastedown includes ink inscription of ownership. Red cloth binding with gilt embossed title and illustration of a flower on the front. The book has been repaired at the hinges, but is in fair condition.
