Description

LOS ANGELES: SEPTEMBER 4, 1781 TO SEPTEMBER 9, 1850 Color: Black and white "Los Angeles: September 4, 1781 to September 9, 1850" (Los Angeles: Los Angeles County Museum, 1957), 31 pp. The softcover book's front cover has a copy of a William Rich Hutton drawing of Los Angeles from 1847. The publication's title is at the top with the museum name at the bottom. The back cover is blank. The work was published in connection with an exhibit consisting of paintings, documents, and other items from private sources and the museum's collections presented by the museum in September and October 1957. Curator of History Ruth I. Mahood wrote a foreword describing the museum's three related exhibits on Los Angeles for 1957-59, focusing on the city's history in distinct periods from its founding to the present. Acknowledgements include Thomas W. Temple II, who loaned material on the Temple and Workman families for the exhibit. A brief history, in less than two pages, was written by historian John E. Baur. The catalog lists objects with accession numbers or source collection and a number of black and white photographs of the objects are provided, including images of William Workman, Antonia Margarita Workman de Temple, and F. P. F. Temple, and an invoice of Workman's from 1841. The items is in fair condition with some cover surface soiling, creases, dented corners, discoloration, and the stapled binding nearly completely loose.
