Description

Color: Black; White; Brown A photograph, attributed to Oscar Shaw, of a street scene in Los Angeles, in which there are a number of horses gathered. The view shows a wide dirt street with four buildings from one to three stories in height, in the background, some leafless trees at the right background, a young boy observing in the foreground, and, in the street, some ten or so riderless horses, around which is a gathered crowd. On the lower right in pencil is the year "1895" and the inscription "Street in / Los Angeles." On the back upper right in pen is "These [sic] photo taken / by Oscar Shaw / in the Old Days / of Los / Angeles." At the left is, also in ink, "Los Angeles / Calif / yr 1800 (late)." Below this latter is another ink inscription: "Wonder what street / this is? / Don't know if its / a Parade start / or Selling Horses." To the right of this last are two pencil drawings by a child. With corner rubbing; creases on the back; dented corners; surface soiling; slight image fading; a small loss of the top left and right corners of the image; stains on the back; and tears on the top of the image and on the mount, the overall condition is fair.
