"Los Angelos, [Los Angeles and Independence] R.R. Depot, California," ca. 1875. The view shows the a side of the French Second Empire style depot with the warehouse, including a broad, hipped and shingled roof, behind it. A locomotive and a portion of one car are at the right and there are several persons standing near the depot and train. The Los Angeles and Independence Railroad was started in the spring of 1874 with F. P. F. Temple as President, but, in early 1875, the company was incorporated and largely financed by new President, Senator John P. Jones. The depot was completed by fall 1875 and service begun to the new resort town of Santa Monica. On the reverse is a lengthy pencil inscription ascribing the view as a pirated, copy view from Anthony & Scovill Co. with other information, including the depot's location at 4th and San Pedro streets. With liquid stains on the mount, soiling on the image and mount, edge bumping on the mount, and a chipped piece at the right image, the overall condition is good.Lexicon
