LOS PASTORELAS PERFORMANCE DRAWING, ANDRES PICO ADOBE, CA. 1850.
Photograph, Reproduction: A color reproduction photograph of a drawing showing a performance of the Christmas-season religious play, Los Pastorelas, at the Los Angeles adobe of Andres Pico, ca. 1850. The performance is depicted in the courtyard of a one-story flat-roofed adobe. A group of audience members and participants stands around the edge of the courtyard, while at center are the principal characters, Satan and the archangel Michael, standing next to a fire. The Devil has a mask and holds a long staff in his right hand. Michael with wings and a head covering, holds a wand-like short staff in his left hand. The scene shown is the climax, in which Michael conquers Satan, who attempted to dissuade the shepherds (or pastorelas) from visiting the newborn Jesus. The identification notes that the drawing was a watercolor done by Bob Natz in 1992. The photograph is in mint condition. At the bottom in pen on the image used for this copy is, "Los Pastorelas performed at the home of Andres Pico, Los Angeles, c. 1850" and "Watercolor by Bob Natz, [copyright symbol] 1992."
