Description

Color: Brown Instruction and sheet music for the mandolin-guitar, ca. 1920s. The 162 unbound pages contain sheet music for many easy-to-play songs. Clearly for the beginner, the songs are printed without the traditional bar lines and notes. Instead, the bar lines are substituted by a continuous line that runs from top to bottom. On the line are a series of different size and color circles, next to the number of the chord that must be struck, representing the length of a note: an open whole circle for 4 beats; half and open for 2 beats; one-quarter and open for 1 beat; a whole and black for 1/2 beat; half and black for 1/4 beat; and one-quarter and black for 1/8 beat. A legend showing the latter is located at the top left of the pages. Under the legend are brief instructions. At the end are a reference chart and some traditional sheet music. In the accession are a mandolin-guitar which is item .1, a hammer .2, a pick .3, a tuning key .4, and an instruction book .5. With brittleness of the paper; heavy browning of the paper; loose pages; tears and losses; and heavy wear, the artifact is in poor condition.
