Description

Color: Black; White A negative of a black and white photograph of Main and First Streets in La Puente, 1947. Seen from the west, Main runs east towards the background. Many automoblies are parked along the street facing in towards the sidewalk. On the left side of the street are utility poles, light poles, and four brick buildings with flat roofs. The first and third buildings have pointed facades, though are flat-roofed like their neighbors. The first building, at the far left, has two store fronts. Over the first is a sign reading, "ELECTRIC/ SHOP," while the other, at the right, has a sign in the shape of a shoe. Across the street are two light posts in front of a business with the word, "HOUSEWARES" written on a window to the far right, while a sign projecting from the Main Street side of the building reads "KELVINATOR" and there appears to be a sign hidden behind it which reads "HARDWARE." This store was Hammersley's hardware. Lawnmowers displayed for sale are in front of the shop and a street sign at the corner reads, "1ST ST." Only the crosswalk of First Street can be seen on the left foreground. Across the background is "P" Hill, trees, and the two-story Rowland Hotel. Near the bottom right corner is, "La Puente, 1947." On the left is the photographer's mark which reads, "PETTIT'S STUDIO/ COMMERCIAL PHOTOGRAPHY", but the rest of the photographer's information is illegible. With no signs of wear, the image, which has a corresponding print in 99.5.11.241, is in good condition. Number-Units: 1
