Description

A maniple from the Thomas W. Temple II Collection. Made of silk, with a brown cotton backing and green cotton lining, the front has a floral pattern, now quite worn and faded, with green, orange, yellow, red and brown colors. According to Alice Wolf from information provided by the Los Angeles County Museum of Art Textile Department, the piece is a circa 1860s to 1870s reweave of original point patterns dating back as far as the 18th century or earlier. This work was typically done in Krefeld, Germany, done in a traditional fashion with handwoven linen. In poor condition with much fading of the floral pattern, torn and distended sections throughout, and many loose threads.
