Description

Color: Black; White; Red A street map of Montebello and surrounding areas, issued by Security Trust & Savings Bank, 1926. The front cover has a title of "SECURITY / Map of Montebello" with much other text, including a note that the map was free. At the bottom is the bank name and head office location. At the bottom left is a small inscription "7-26-10M" probably indicating the publication date as July 1926. On the back cover is a listing of branch offices of the bank throughout southern California and a list of capital and surplus and further resources. When the map is unfolded once, there are advertisements for the Automobile Club of Southern California, on the left panel, and the Security Company of the distributing bank. When opened once more, revealing four panels, there is a general central California road map, extending from Los Angeles to Chico and showing, in red, major paved roadways with unpaved roads in black. A listing of other maps is given below this, including Pasadena and Monrovia editions for the west San Gabriel Valley. Another bank advertisement, this for the Montebello branch covers one panel. When opened once more, showing eight panels, a detailed map of Montebello and surrounding towns (including well locations in the Montebello oil field), with a street index, is at the upper left, with smaller maps of regional roads northwest of Los Angeles and another bank advertisement for locations of its Security Company. Fully opened to sixteen panels, the artifact has a regional map of southern California showing paved and unpaved roads. With some creases, light discoloration, worn edges and dogeared corners, the map is in fair condition.
