Color: Black; White
A black and white photograph of a map of the southwest part of Rancho La Puente, by L. Seebold, June 1870. Mainly bordered by ornamental design with x-shaped patterns and shell or fan-like designs at the upper corners, the map shows the holdings of William Workman amounting to 5,652 acres. The Workman Homestead is near the center, shown with a dotted line boundary and labeled "Field of W. Workman." This may be the section that became the 75-acre parcel after the failure of the Temple and Workman bank in 1876. Various buildings, including the Workman House, El Campo Santo cemetery and wineries are shown, along with dots to indicate farming areas along the San Jose Creek. A drawing of the Workman House, in its remodeled appearance, is at the bottom left and labeled "Residence of W. Workman, Esq." Three delineated land holdings are also shown to the northwest of the Homestead, including 500 acres each allotted for Joseph Workman, William Temple, and Thomas W. Temple. Bordering the latter parcels is the "County Road through the Ranchos Puente[,] Nogales[,] and San Jose." Raised areas of land at the left and lower left include the northwest corner of the Puente Hills and the area now known as Avocado Heights. Along the creek near these hilly areas is a site denoted "Mill of W. Workman, not far from the San Gabriel River, which meanders along the left. There are two separate tables, one for boundary lines at the upper left and the other for Tabling, giving more detail, including total acreage. In good condition, the artifact is in good condition.
