"Maps of Los Angeles: From Ord's Survey to the End of the Boom of the Eighties," by W. W. Robinson (Los Angeles: Dawson's Bookshop,) 1966. The hardcover book has a gray cover with a center medallion on the front cover with a floral design and an angel at the center. On the spine is a glued red label with the title and author's last name on it. The work consists of two parts, with the first being short essays on subdividers and map makers, the Ord Survey of 1849, the four square leagues of the original city grant, ranchos and public lands, the boom of the 1880s, and the role of freeways in land use in modern years. Part two contains a selective list of important maps and a chronological list of county surveyors and engineers. Many of the maps in the list are reprinted in high quality detail. One of these, an 1884 map of the city, is reproduced in its original size and was stored in a back pocket. It is now item 1.2 of this accession and is stored flat in a map folder. With only light rubbing at the spine and corners and very slight page yellowing, the item is in good condition.Lexicon
