Color: Black and white
A black and white reproduction portrait photograph of Maria Antonia Dominguez Davoust, ca. 1870. The studio portrait, taken by pioneer Los Angeles photographer Henri Penelon, is identified as "MARIA ANTONIA DOMINGUEZ / ORFILA / MOTHER OF / MARIA ANTONIA DOMINGUEZ DAVOUST", which is written in ink on the back. Because, however, Maria Antonia Davoust's daughter, Anita, (later married to John H. Temple, owner of the Homestead from 1888 to 1899) was born in 1866, it is almost certain that this must be Maria Antonia Davoust, not her mother. Davoust is standing next to dark-colored chair with a tasseled crest rail and a light-colored seat. At right appears to be drapery with two large tassels and gold-like metal hanging from the upper right. She wears a horizontally-striped bustled dress with thick stripes of varying sizes and a blouse with narrower horizontal stripes. She has a black belt on and her hair is pulled up tightly in the back. One of her hands rests on the chair and the other is at her side. The original image is a carte-de-visite with Penelon's mark on the back with this reproduction in mint condition.
