Description

A upper torso and head cabinet card studio portrait of Maria Guadalupe Zamorano de Dalton, Valentine Wolfenstein, Los Angeles, ca. 1872. The image shows Señora Dalton wearing a dark-colored dress with a white lace collar. Her hair is pulled up into a bun at the back and she wears earrings. On the reverse, presumably in her hand, is the inscription "To Merced Coronel / From Mrs. Dalton" and modern ID and price markings. Señora Dalton was the daughter of Maria Luisa Argüello and Agustín Zamorano, the first printer in Alta California, and was born in 1832. At age 13, she married English-born merchant Henry Dalton, who also owned several San Gabriel Valley ranchos including the Azusa, north of La Puente. She bore eleven children, of whom seven reached adulthood and lived until 1914. With some small stains, soiling and edge abrasions, the item is in good overall condition.
