Description

Color: Black and white A black and white photograph of a framed sampler made by Mary Workman, 4 October 1821. The item is a classic sampler with four sections of needlework containing the alphabet and ampersand in different styles. Two of these contain numeric samples, the first with the numbers 1-10 and the fourth with the numbers 11-17. The second and third have ship, diamond and heart figures. Under this section is a short poem "Pleasures of Religion", though it is not known if this is an original poem or copied from some one else. At the bottom is "Mary Workman Penrith October 4th 1821." Separating the various elements of the piece are bars with varying geometric designs and under the poem title is a black bar. There is also a frame surrounding the work in a dark closely-stitched pattern with a border outside of this resembling a series of "x" designs. The piece is mounted in a simple dark-wood frame with plain glass. The photograph is in mint condition. Number-Units: 1
