Color: Black; White
A black and white photograph of May Romero with her children Doris and Jack at the Homestead with Topsy the pony, ca. 1929. Doris Romero, who has bobbed hair, is on the far left sitting on top of the pony. She holds a riding crop in her right hand and wears a white short-sleeve dress and long socks. Topsy is facing to the right, has black hair, and is equipped with a leather bridle and saddle. Standing in back of the pony is May Romero who is wearing a short-sleeved dress, has hbobbed hair and is looking down to the right at the pony. Her son Jack, whose face is partially covered by the animal's hair, stands next to her. His hair is parted to the right, he has his left arm on his hip, and his right leg is extended out. Jack's attire includes a white long-sleeved shirt and dark slacks. Across the background is a building, which probably the Romero home located between the Water Tower and cemetery, capped by a flat clay shingled roof. Also with clay shingles is the overhang below which is supported by wood beams and on the bottom center is an arched doorway with a portion of another on the far left. Two palm trees can be seen on the far left and right; the tree on the right is in a planter where a water hose is attached to the wall in the back. Across the bottom in cursive writing it reads, "Doris, Mom, Jack, + Topsy." This is the family of Jack Romero, ranch foreman, chauffeur, and brother of the Temple family housekeeper, Maud Romero Bassity. With no signs of wear, the image, which has a corresponding negative in 99.6.7.175, is in good condition.
