Description

Color: Black; Red; White "Memoirs of Jose Francisco Palomares," translated by Thomas W. Temple II (Glen Dawson: Los Angeles, 1955), 69 pp. The book has a white hardcover with a red spine and the title at the top right of the front. An illustration of a mounted Mexican soldier in uniform is at the bottom left corner, and this and the lettering are all in black ink. At the beginning of the inside are a title page and a translator's note. Palomares, who was a former lieutenant of the Californio infantry of mounted riflemen, recalls many accounts including battles with native Indians; ranchero cattle drives; many campaigns against American forces during the Mexican-American War; the capture of Los Angeles by the Americans; and much more. Two military maps from 1848 and a color plate of Los Angeles in 1857 are included. The text was translated by Temple from the original manuscript in the Bancroft Library. With light abrasions; a small dent on the bottom corner; light soiling; and small tears on the cover corners, the object is in goor condition overall.
