"Message from the President of the United States . . .," Part I, House Ex. Doc. No. 1, 33rd Congress, 1st Session (Washington, D. C.: Robert Armstrong, Printer,) 1853. The item includes the 18-page message of Franklin Pierce, delivered on 5 December 1853; reports of the same date from the Secretary of State; Secretary of the Interior, including a brief mention of mineral lands in California on page 57; General Land Office commissioner, including mention from pages 77-79, 82-83, and 108-09 of the California Land Claims Act and disbursed public lands; the Indian Affairs commissioner, dated 26 November 1853, including discussion of a reservation system for California Indians on 258-59 and reprints of thirteen documents pertaining to Edward Beale's appintment of superintendent of Indian Affairs in California, Benjamin D. Wilson's role as previous Indian agent and assistant to Beale, and the establishment of a reservation and military fort for protecting both whites and Indians at Tejon; and the Commissioner of Pensions from 10 October 1853. There are also numerous children's markings throughout. With much staining, soiling, edge rubbing and some losses to the boards and foxing and stains to pages, the overall condition is poor.Lexicon
