METAL VIEWING PLATE LID PIECE FROM CASKET

Entry/Object ID

98.20.5.1

Description

A piece of a metal lid, believed to be a cover for the glass viewing plate of a coffin, ca. 1870, unearthed during the digging of the crypt for Nellie D. Temple, April 1998. The piece appears to be from the flat middle section away from the edge, but has a piece of hardware consisting of a screw, washer and metal plate with a decorative pattern on one side that indicates the piece is from one end of the lid (see item 4.2 for a similar piece of hardware.) With pervasive rusting and pitting, the piece is in poor condition.
