Description

MILTON KAUFFMAN TO WALTER P. TEMPLE, 5 AUGUST 1919 A telegram from Milton Kauffman to Walter P. Temple, 5 August 1919. The telegram, issued by the Washington-Alaska Military Cable and Telegraph Sysytem, was sent by Kauffman to Temple, care of the steamship Princess Mary at Skagway, Alaska. Kauffman, who was Temple's business manager, sent the message that an oil well, evidently from Texas, where Kauffman was leaving for the following week, had come in with 2,000 barrels (see also a copy of a telegram sent by Kauffman from Texas to Temple a short time later in the research files.) At the bottom is a handwritten message from Temple indicating receipt of the cable, that a telegram had been sent, and that the Temples had arrived in Alaska safely. With folds into thirds horizontally and then half vertically; tears along the left edge of the horizontal folds and at the top of the vertical fold; several large creases; bent corners; and a few stains on the reverse, the telegram is in fair condition. In black ink in Walter Temple's hand below the telegram message is: "Your cable received, Sent you wireless from Princess Mary / 2 days ago. Arrived here safely, All well, With best wishes / to you all, / Walter P. Temple." In pencil near the telegram address is the number "18" circled and in pencil.
