Description

MINTON & CO. ENCAUSTIC TILE, BLUE, BROWN, RED, WHITE, AND YELLOW FLORAL PATTERN Color: Blue, brown, red, white, yellow One of a set of four Minton & Co. encaustic ceramic tiles, ca. 1860. The piece is made of three plastic layers. The design consists of a section in blue background with yellow vines and flowers and white flowers; a bar with yellow borders, a white background and yellow four-petaled flowers; and a section with brown background and partial yellow flowers and a circular area of red background with a white four-petaled flower in the center. There are 25 perforations on the back to assist in the adhering of the tile to a surface. Minton & Co.'s imprint is on the back and reads: "MINTON & CO / PATENT / STOKE UPON TRENT" and there is a number 2 stamped next to this. There are a few small chips on one edge; a few cracks on the section with the brown and red glazing, especially near the five-petaled flower and one partial flower on the side; and general surface scratches, but the object is in good condition.
