Description

Color: Brown; Orange A program for the Mission Play, ca. 1920. The front cover has the play's title and author at the top, under which is the note that the play was in its "Ninth Year." At the center is an image of a white-haired monk or priest, with his right hand raised as if giving a benediction, with a Mission-like structure in the background. The sky is colored orange and the monk's outfit and the Mission building are in light brown. Below the image is the opening date of the play, 17 January 1920 and identification of two actors, Frederick Warde and Mrs. Tyrone Power. Performance times follow, as well as an admonition to "Take [the] Pacific Electric Car." The inside features three sections: on the left is a description of the play; at center are photographs of the "Spanish" dancers and actors playing "Indians"; and at right is general information about the performances, including days, times, admission and information for visiting the Mission before the the first performance. The phone number for the playhouse and the Pacific Electric Railway office are also provided. Along the inside bottom are four encomiums for the play. The back has an advertisement for the Pacific Electric, including a map of its southern California lines, and a small box with information about winter trips to Catalina Island. Aside from very minor abrasions on the edge and some creases, the artifact is in good condition.
