Description

Color: Black; White A theater program for the Mission Play at the Mission Playhouse, San Gabriel, ca. 1913. The 28-page booklet has the play's title and location at the top right of the front cover. At the center is a black and white photograph of actor Benjamin Horning as Father Junipero Serra. Seen from the waist up, the actor is dressed in a Franciscan robe. A crucifix is tucked under his belt and his hands are clasped on his lap. On the back are drawings of California's twenty-one missions, El Camino Real, and the Mission Playhouse. The latter is the building used prior to the completion of the new theater in 1927. At the beginning of the inside are listings for the production's officers, executive staff, and general play information. On the opposite page is a photograph of Lucretia Del Valle as Josefa Yorba sitting on a chair wearing a long Spanish dress. The page that follows has head-and-shoulders photographs of Del Valle, Horning, and the playwright, John Steven McGroarty. The rest of the program contains a listing of the cast; a listing of the play's three acts with their stages; a synopsis; a review as it appeared in the February 2, 1913 edition of the Los Angeles Examiner by J. Clifford Cowles; and many advertisements for local businesses such as doctors, hotels, jewelers, the Mount Lowe railway, and Barker Brothers furniture store. There are also black and white photographs of many of the play's scenes. The artifact has some creases; soiling; discoloration; some stains; and small tears, but is otherwise in good overall condition.
