Description

Color: Black; White A black and white postcard of the Mission Playhouse, ca. 1927. The white mission-like structure is at the center and has a domed tower at the center of the top. Two small arched towers flank the latter. The main entrance is at the bottom and has a flat tile roof and three large arches across the front. A shield is above the center arch while two women stand under the one at the far right. Also across the front are four iron light sconces. A two-story wing is at the left of the main entrance and has a flat tile roof and three windows on the second floor. An iron balcony is at the front of the window at the right. The first floor has an arch at the left and two small windows at the right. A paved courtyard is across the front of the building. At the center of this stand six people in a circle. At the far right are trees, palms, and grass. An automobile with a canvas top is along the curb at the far left. An unpaved street is across the bottom of the foreground. At the center of the back is a tall scaffold-like structure. At the bottom right corner in white is, "The Mission Play House / San Gabriel, Calif." Across the top of the back is, "POST CARD." At the bottom left and right are the words, "MESSAGE," and "ADDRESS." Walter P. Temple was a major donor to the construction of the theater which was completed in 1927. With light abrasions; small creases and dents at the corners; and some surface soiling, the object is in good condition overall.
