Description

Postcard: A color postcard showing the front of the Mission Playhouse (now the San Gabriel Civic Auditorium), San Gabriel, ca. 1930. The Mission Revival-style building is at center with its three-bell tower, front colonnaded entrance and square shaped stage area at left. To the right is a building with large trees next to a small tile-roofed building. At left is a planter with blue, yellow, and red flowers. Two playbill kiosks are at left and right. The structure was completed in 1927 with Walter P. Temple and Henry Huntington as the largest individual donors to its erection. The building stands on Ramona Drive, just west of the Mission San Gabriel. The card, published by News Stand Distributors of Los Angeles, is in good condition with discoloration and edge wear. On the rear is, "MISSION PLAYHOUSE/SAN GABRIEL, CALIFORNIA/A $750,000 beautiful Playhouse where several months each/year, John Steven McGroarty's famous Mission Play is pro-/duced."
