MISSION WALKWAY, SOUTHEAST GATE, LOOKING EAST, CA. 1941-42
Color: Black; White
A black and white photograph taken from the southeast gate of the Mission Walkway, looking toward La Casa Nueva, ca. 1941 or 1942. The photographer stood just outside the gate, which is partially visible. A column and part of the trellis and vines on the south side of the walkway are left of center while the flagstone walkway, lined by hedges, leads to La Casa Nueva. Notable features are the wooden fire escape stairs, built by the Brown family, at the ends of the second floor dormitories; and the original tile panel on the inside of the gate, which is partially visible, and shows elements of the Temple family coat-of-arms. Some of the landscaping, aside from the hedges, include a lawn and bushes and shrubs around the walkway and the house, as well as some trees [which are leafless indicating a winter date for the photo.] On the reverse center, in pencil, is the number "25." With little indication of wear, aside from some discoloration on the lower reverse, the artifact is in good condition.
