MISSION WALKWAY, WEST SIDE, LOOKING SOUTH, CA. 1941-42
Color: Black; White
A black and white photograph of the west side of the Mission Walkway, looking south, ca. 1941 or 1942. Taken from the center of the walkway, the main wall is at the right; support columns on the left; and wooden support or trellis at the upper center with grape vines growing on it. Between the main wall and floor and around the columns are varieties of shrubs and bushes, quite tall ones on the right and smaller ones near the columns, including either agapanthus or other lilies. Some of the decorative elements, including lines for the various medallions with the missions' names on them, can be made out on the floor. At the back of the image with his left hand resting on the wall in one of the arches and wearing a dark suit and hat is Harry J. Brown, owner of El Encanto Sanitarium which then occupied the property. On the reverse toward the left corner is the penciled number "17", while, in the hand of a former museum curator in pencil, at the lower left corner is "Harry Brown / ca. 41-42." With slight wear on the edges and very light discoloration, the artifact is in good condition.
