MONTEBELLO OIL FIELDS FROM THE SOUTHEASTEntry/Object ID
99.10.1.1Description
Color: Black; White
A panoramic black and white photograph of the Montebello oil fields, ca. 1923. The image, taken from the southeast in a plowed field, possibly near the current site of La Merced Intermediate School at La Merced Street and Poplar Avenue, shows a wide expanse of the hills and the lands below them, dotted with many oil derricks and storage tanks. There are also a number of buildings, a few on the hills and some on the flatlands, as well as groves that may be fruit or nut orchards. At the far right is the Soto-Sanchez Adobe, now a historic landmark in Montebello. Recent additions to the adobe, made by the Crocker family, provide the estimated date for the image. It is likely that the large compound visible at the top of the hills are from the Baldwin portion of the field, while the Temple lease would be out of the image at the far right, a short distance north of the Soto-Sanchez Adobe. With a fold at the right one-third; stains from some sort of liquid at several portions, especially at the far right and lower left; and creases, the photograph is in fair condition.
