Color: Red; White
A box for Necco chocolate peppermints, ca. 1930s. The box is white with lettering on one of the four sides that reads, "CHOCOLATE / 5 / PEPPERMINTS." On the left of the latter is a circle with the word "Necco" at the center. "Necco" is also on the flaps with the price of 5 cents. On two of the sides are the words, "Necco / CHOCOLATE PEPPERMINTS," and above this is a seal with the words, "Tested and Approved / Bureau of Foods Sanitation / and Health / Good Housekeeping Magazine." The name and location of the New England Confectionery Company are on the fourth side. All of the printing is in red ink. The artifact, which is believed to have been from the Homestead's military school days in the early 1930s, was found in a previously-unknown crawlspace above Thomas Temple's Bedroom door along with boy's gym shorts which is item .1.1, and three walnut shells which are items .3.1-.3. With abrasions; creases; dents; discoloration; some fading of the lettering; folds; some pest damage; soiling; light stains; tears; and heavy warping, the object is in poor condition.
