Description

NEEDLE PACK PROMOTING HOOVER AND CURTIS FOR THE 1928 PRESIDENTIAL ELECTION Color: Blue; Red; White A sewing needle packet, promoting the candidacy of Herbert Hoover and Charles Curtis for President and Vice-President of the United States, 1928. Manufactured by the Keil & Styer Co. of Philadelphia, the artifact has a paper cover with photographs of the candidates on one side with their names and sought offices above and below the oval-shaped images. Red, white, and blue vertical stripes adorn this side. On the reverse is a blue background with the party's elephant symbol at the bottom and a red banner with "G. O. P." on the elephant's body. Above this is the phrase "WORK AND VOTE / for the / REPUBLICAN / PARTY / AND / PROSPERITY." On the left side of the inner portion are six needles at the top with one missing--these are longer, thicker needles, while a pouch turned sideways at the bottom contains three smaller, thinner needles. A gold colored box on this latter has the company name Dix and Rands on it. At the bottom left is the copyright date and manufacturer's name. The right side has a slate of candidates in addition to those aforementioned, including ones for U. S. Senator, Superior Court Judge, State Treasurer, and Auditor General. It is assumed that this is for Pennsylvania, given the location of the manufacturer, but this is not verified. Information about voting registration and assessment follows, with the election date of November 6 at the bottom. With dented corners, light soiling, and some foxing, the artifact is in good condition.
