Description

NEGATIVE STRIP OF PHOTOS OF THE WORKMAN FAMILY AND BOYLE HEIGHTS Color: Black; White A strip negative with six images of the Workman family and a Boyle Heights scene. Exposures 14-15 are of the three eldest Workman children, Boyle, Mary Julia, and Elizabeth, ca. 1875. Mary Julia, at left, rests her head on her hand and that arm's elbow is on a table. A simple drapery backdrop is behind the three children. Exposures 16-18 are of Mary Julia Workman in an 1890s studio portrait. She wears a very elaborate striped dress with much lace trim and a dramatic hat with feather ornamentation. Exposure 19 is of a group, probably all agricultural laborers, in a Boyle Heights field. Exposures 14 and 16 were printed and are items 1.13 and 1.14 from this accession. Exposure 19 was circled and then crossed out and another exposure of this image from a different negative strip was printed instead. As a newly made artifact, the strip is in mint condition.
