Description

NEW BRIDGE AT HOLLENBECK PARK LAKE, BOYLE HEIGHTS, CA. 1890s Color: Black; White A reproduced black and white photograph of a new bridge crossing the lake at Hollenbeck Park, Boyle Heights, Los Angeles, ca. 1890. The image was taken from a point on a rise above the body of water and workers are at left on the bridge, which appears to be nearly completed. Wheelbarrows at left and right on the span indicate that a cement walk was being laid. At the right is the west shore of the lake with a path running along the edge and trees and other landscaping in abundance. At left is the eastern shore with a similar appearance, though perhaps not quite as densely landscaped. At the upper left seems to be a road and a house is seen beyond. At the upper right is another area where it looks like there are some houses. The view appears to be from the north looking south because the bridge, which survives, runs east to west. Hollenbeck Park was established in the 1890s by the subdivision's founder, William H. Workman, nephew of William Workman, and the widow of a partner, John E. Hollenbeck. Compare this view with that found in item .24. As a newly produced photograph, the artifact is in mint condition. Number-Units: 1
