July 24, 1848, published as Ex. Doc. No. 70 for the first session of the Thirtieth Congress. The disbound document, totaling 49 pages, consists of a message to the House of Representatives in answer to that body's resolutions of ten days previously requesting information on New Mexico and California, specifically their boundaries, forms of civil government and other material. There is also a report from Secretary of State James Buchanan on the boundaries of the regions and also their alleged population figures. Other governmental reports concern acreage in the territories, their existing forms of government by Secretary of War William Marcy, material on postwar unrest in New Mexico and other conditions there, and from page 28 other reports on conditions in California from September 18, 1846 to July 20, 1848. With acid burns; creases; soiling; darkening; foxing; a slightly loose binding at the bottom; stains; and some spine and edge tears, the overall condition is fair.
