Description

"No. 102. Landscape Selections at San Gabriel," originally photographed by Alexander C. Varela, Los Angeles, ca. 1878 and republished by Isaiah W. Taber, San Francisco, ca. early 1880s. The view shows a pond that is fenced in and has some oak trees near it, while in the distance is open land. This may be the swampy area just northeast of the mission. Varela moved to San Jose and worked as a photographer there in 1880, but evidently sold his negatives to Taber before returning to Washington, D. C., where he worked in the federal government system. With slight mount curvature, some soiling and edge rubbing, and fading, the overall condition is fair.
