"No. 117. Davies' [Davis] Cañon, San Gabriel Mountains, Los Angeles Co., Calif.," originally photographed by Alexander C. Varela, Los Angeles, ca. 1878 and republished by Isaiah W. Taber, San Francisco, ca. early 1880s. The view shows three men, two standing at the bottom right and the third perched high on a tree branch at the upper left, in the densely forested canyon above the Sierra Madre Villa hotel and resort. The canyon, in fact, was the water source for the resort, now the location of the Sierra Madre Villa subdivision of northeast Pasadena. Varela moved to San Jose and worked as a photographer there in 1880, but evidently sold his negatives to Taber before returning to Washington, D. C., where he worked in the federal government system. With slight mount curvature, some soiling and edge rubbing, the overall condition is good.Lexicon
