Description

"No. 124. Landscape Selections at Baldwin's Santa Anita Rancho," originally photographed by Alexander C. Varela, Los Angeles, ca. 1878 and republished by Isaiah W. Taber, San Francisco, ca. early 1880s. The view shows the lake that was where Baldwin occupied the adobe of former ranch owner Hugo Reid and where he added the Queen Anne cottage, now part of the Arboretum of Los Angeles County. Native plans and shurbs surround the body of water and there is open land in the background. Varela moved to San Jose and worked as a photographer there in 1880, but evidently sold his negatives to Taber before returning to Washington, D. C., where he worked in the federal government system. With slight mount curvature, some soiling and edge rubbing, and slight fading, the overall condition is good.
