Description
"No. 146. San Gabriel Mountains from Baldwin's Santa Anita Rancho," originally photographed by Alexander C. Varela, Los Angeles, ca. 1878 and republished by Isaiah W. Taber, San Francisco, ca. early 1880s. The view shows the lake that was where Baldwin occupied the adobe of former ranch owner Hugo Reid and where he added the Queen Anne cottage, now part of the Arboretum of Los Angeles County. At the water's edge is a rowboat with persons in it and native plans and shurbs surround the body of water. In the distance is the faint outline of the mountains. Varela moved to San Jose and worked as a photographer there in 1880, but evidently sold his negatives to Taber before returning to Washington, D. C., where he worked in the federal government system. With slight mount curvature, some soiling and edge rubbing, the overall condition is good.
